Radiation Safety Specialist

The Radiation Safety Specialist oversees the daily implementation of the radiation protection program (RPP) to meet the criteria set forth in the radiation licenses and registrations issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) to allow Northeastern University to utilize radioactive materials (RAM) in the teaching and research programs. RAM includes radiation source materials and equipment. The RPP is managed by the Radiation Safety Specialist with oversight by the Radiation Safety Committee that grants authorization to individual research faculty to use RAM based on qualifications and need.

License requirements include the security and safe handling/use of all RAM; providing safety training for all faculty, staff, and students who work with RAM; conducting periodic compliance audits in laboratories and other work areas utilizing RAM, and monitoring worker radiation exposure to ensure that dose rates are as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA). The Radiation Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing the above programs along with providing professional support in a number of other environmental and occupational health programs maintained by the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) office to enhance teaching and research activities that utilize hazardous materials or potentially impact compliance environmental or occupational safety regulations.

The individual in this role will report to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety.
Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a scientific field with five years experience working within a broad scope license is required. Must also have familiarity with a range of basic and advanced research techniques used in academic teaching and research laboratories and with the unique aspects of implementing a laboratory safety management program at a large research institution.

Must have the technical qualifications to assist in the implementation of a RPP for a broad scope license that includes high activity gamma sources and for a variety of non-ionizing radiation safety programs such as laser safety, electromagnetic fields, etc.
